Art of Suicide is the story of the Whitehall loft, home and hang-out to a band of bohemians and their dreams.

Synopsis

Paintings, poems, plays, and movies — it’s just another day at White Hall Studios, an eclectic commune of young artists and bohemians alike. Painter Joel Mallon and his eager band of friends are out to put themselves and their studio on the map. But just how long can an artist get rejected, overlooked, and written off before his “big break” comes? It’s at a time like this, when nothing seems to be going his way, that Joel thinks he’s hit a creative wall. That is, until a muse arrives in the form of his friend’s free-spirited sister Megan. Joel suddenly becomes possessed by an artistic fire, and an innocent conversation about how artists only get famous after they’re dead really makes him think … The regulars of White Hall soon learn that the effects of suicide travel far beyond the fate of one angst-ridden individual. Art of Suicide examines the delicacy of relationships and the challenges faced by the wannabe working artist. How far are you willing to go to promote yourself? Where do you draw the line?

This film was masterfully executed. Bent Brooks’ excellent direction of five unknown actors from Athens, Georgia created a slowly unfolding story of idolism, Idealism, and jealousy between five bohemians living by their wits and skills. As the five friends come together to form the White Hall Studio, emotions become complicated as some of the group has more success than others in their chosen endeavor. One is a writer, another a painter, an actor and a filmmaker and a fifth is a wild card as she first come’s on the scene straight out of Art School and becomes a bit of a muse. What transpires is a beautifully composed film orchestrated by Brooks and buoyed by intense and incredible acting from his entire cast. The cinematography was stunning as Brooks chose to create a painterly look with muted tones and splashes of color which meshed perfectly with the movie’s theme and “vibe.” The camera moves slowly and carefully with purpose and the actors movement within those frames create some well composed sequences. Some of the frames seemed to be paintings themselves and if the frames were taken and blown up, I would happily hang them on my walls. This movie is a surprising little gem with a bold and satisfactory resolution.” ~ Pericles Lewness, Director
