No matter where you live, no matter what you do, no matter who you love, the result is always AUTOMATIC.
SynopsisDo you really think you have a choice? In Automatic six people examine that very question. Three reckless men. Three troubled women. Three unlikely couples. Each coasting through life on their pre-determined paths. Each fulfilling destinies bound only to them. Each tied to one another with varying degrees of success. As their lives unravel, they do what any good American would do...pull themselves up by the bootstraps and begin again. Except...it's worse than where they started.
Director's StatementUnlike any other film I’ve directed, Automatic has been the most purely independent filmmaking experience. The process has been raw and improvisational in its evolution. This essence is what attracts me not only to the art of filmmaking, but to the art of living. Automatic, embodies this formula.
Automatic explores dark issues that I had never experienced before & darker issues I had. It felt like an existing human life, a sad hidden truth that breathes in all of us. I was intrigued & wanted to tell the story as real as possible with a camera. I didn’t want to manipulate the actors too much, I wanted them to bring their experiences & then assimilate that into their characters.
Since I had only done documentaries at that point, I was excited about the world of fiction where I could participate in creating emotions with actors and employ my documentary background of capturing them without manipulation.
Automatic has been an overwhelmingly difficult, yet fulfilling process for me as a filmmaker and a person. I hope audiences can absorb the sadness revealed in the disconnectedness in the film to become aware of the value in having true relationships.
The characters have become drones to their habits, separating themselves from their hearts. This behavior can be reflected in Western society. My hope is that people will walk away examining who they are & how they relate, thus furthering themselves to self-discovery…being who they are meant to be.
