Chasing the American dream in South Africa

Synopsis

There are a growing number of Americans in pursuit of opportunities outside of the US. Filmmaker, Stafford U. Bailey documented 12 such individuals in his “Showtime” film, “Blacks Without Borders: chasing the American dream in South Africa.”
This award winning film is an emotional story about hardship, sacrifice and great rewards. It plunges into the lives of a group of African Americans who went to South Africa to find the American dream. They discovered that America is not the only land of opportunity. The boundaries that many of them faced in the United States don’t exist in South Africa. It’s funny, heartwarming and passionate. Blacks Without Borders will take you by surprise and leave you deeply moved

Director's Statement

Once Blacks Without Borders started airing on Showtime we got flooded with emails and phone calls from people praising the film. One guy said he’d seen it 13 times. Others were brought to tears and several people have moved to South Africa to pursue opportunities there. This is the kind of impact this film has had on people. However, this one email we received from Valerie in Atlanta, Georgia made all the difficulties we had getting this film made worth the fight.

“I just watched your film on Showtime and enjoyed it tremendously. It has inspired me to continue and dream. I am a married mother of four ages 19,14,8,10months-boy, girl, boy, boy respectively. My husband has recently been diagnosed with renal failure, we have lost our home in foreclosure and our version of the "American dream" has disappeared. I have been frustrated trying to find my way but your film has inspired me to dream big and think big...keep up the good work.”

“You have touched a lot of people with Blacks Without Borders…this an incredible documentary…you must see this film.” - Michael Baisden The Michael Baisden Show

This film was shot on location in New York, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban South Africa. During our travels we kept noticing a growing number of Americans pursing opportunities outside of the US. Following further research, we discovered that these modern day globetrotters were also coming from the African American community. Since no major documentary covering this topic was being made or was planned, we decided to document this trend. After two trips to South Africa and over 100 hours of footage we produced the first and what we hope is a series of films like this.
Blacks Without Borders is a documentary, but it also aims to be a window of opportunity for African Americans of all ages. We want teenagers as well as adults to see this film. Just one glimpse may be enough to stretch the international potential of “The American Dream.”

Everyone who has seen this film has been inspired. It’s a testament to the diversity of African Americans. Blacks Without Borders encourages African Americas to look outside of the US for the American dream. These people live extremely well. They live in places such as a 33,000-sqft mansion that sits on 700 acres to an 11,000-sqft house that overlooks the Indian Ocean. This is South Africa the way you’ve never it before.
