A neighborhood fights city hall.

Synopsis

It's just another day in the neighborhood until residents find out the city is selling the field. Birds, squirrels and rabbits will be homeless. Neighborhood kids won't be able to play in the field. Dogs will lose their favorite spot. Now everyone, including the animals, is out to stop the sale.

Director's Statement

Children are bombarded with slick, fast paced, programs. I wanted to show them that they can make some pretty amazing things without using a computer and give them important information they could use. In addition to the lesson of cooperation and compromise, I wanted to stress what's important in life - friends, family and who you are. One little girl said, all that stuff about saving the animals really made her think about nature. "It showed you how to be a good neighbor." - Ryan Alexander. "City Dogs" features families in ethnically diverse neighborhoods and promotes values of compromise and cooperation. The points it makes can be appreciated by everyone." - School Library Journal. "The kids were able to use their imagination. They enjoyed the story and the music." Rosemarie McBride, 4th Grade Teacher, Brooklawn School. The program also received a positive review on Dr. Sylvia Rimm's National Public Radio Show.

"It inspired my children and brought out their creativity. They asked for clay and they're making their own movie called CITY FROGS." -Marilyn, mother of three

"The kids were able to use their imagination. They enjoyed the story and the music." -Rosemarie McBride, 4th Grade Language Arts/Reading Teacher, Brooklawn Elementary School

"Terrific family entertainment with an important message for all of us.” -Rebecca Rivera, Staff Trainer, Kindercare, Solon, Ohio

I recorded the traffic, planes and birds outside my house in the city. My dog, Sybil, a yellow Lab, did her own barking, growling and moaning. I had to eat a half dozen cupcakes in front of her so she would perform. Neighborhood dogs bark for the other dogs. There was a dog that lived two doors down from me and sat on the roof of his garage just like Smokey in the movie. Cleveland radio personalities, local actors and school children provided the voices. It took six months to build the miniature set and create the clay cast and two months to film, record music, voices and edit the program. There is nothing high tech about it. With some cardboard from a box, poster board, glue and a piece of sandpaper, a child could make a dog house just like Sybil's. Other materials in the set which measures 13 X 8 include plaster, twigs, steel wool, colored foam and popsicle sticks. One mother said her children were inspired by the movie and asked for some clay to make their own movie.
