A writer gets lost in his fiction and releases two ominious characters from his subconscious
Intended Audience: Mature
A writer retreats into isolation in order to complete his masterpiece. Through his obsession with his work he becomes oblivious to his wife and to all other worldly distractions. Cocooned in his fiction, the boundary between imagination and reality begins to blur. Two ominous characters appear who delight in tormenting the writer. They are Eros (the life instinct and pleasure principle) and Thanatos (the death instinct and reality principle) from Freud’s theories of the subconscious.
His wife tries desperately to halt her husband’s mental decline but only succeeds in alienating him further.
In pursuit of solitude, the writer flees the city for a remote countryside, where he allows himself to become completely consumed by his imagination. Eros and Thanatos return. Here, alone, the writer is most vulnerable to the will of these malicious drives.
The inspiration behind the ‘Driven’ story came from a time in my life when I was witnessing a lot of friends struggling with the creative process when writing/ creating their own work and also Freud’s fascinating theory of the Eros and Thanatos drives within the subconscious, which coincidently I was reading at the same time. Both gave me multiple visual ideas to express how the pressures that some creatives put themselves under can begin to alter their characters. In 'Driven' this is taken to the extreme - the protagonist has become a selfish, narcissistic hermit. The film blurs the line between imagination and reality and has dark themes, so I decided a neo-noir look for the film would enhance its effect on the audience.
