A character driven film making a compelling claim for local, sustainable, small scale, eco agriculture and ethical eating.
SynopsisThe award wining, short documentary HEART & SOIL captures the essence of the growing local food consciousness. It moves along to the pace of barefoot children, frolicking livestock and a cast of authentic characters. A lively FAMILY FILM that inspires audiences into awareness and action as it provides thought-provoking insight into a wide variety of interconnected, ecological, social and economic themes. Covering topics such as seed saving, animal husbandry, organic growing practices, food security, carbon foot prints, food safety and more.... According to esteemed Random House author, Deborah Madison, this film, seen in turns as hopeful and devastating should be required viewing in schools across the globe.
Director's StatementI chose to make HEART & SOIL, a character driven documentary, a lyrical toppling forward, like a moving book of poems. I highlighted the lifestyles and wisdom of the delightful, quirky farmers as a more sensual way to reach and inspire a broader viewing audience than if I made a film filled with political talking points with an emphasis on what's gone wrong. I like to write stories and make films filled with metaphor and wisdom. The first scene, first line of HEART & SOIL is a clip of a man and his son feeding Llama's and chickens. He says, " Everybody likes these oats, Lulu (Llama) likes them, the chickens likes them, and Jack Henry ( son) likes them. I chose this line as the opening for the film, to set the stage and tone for a cast of characters that are "sewing their own oats" and to inspire the audience to participate in that process of growing a safe, healthy, local, reliable, ethical food source. I made all decisions in post-production about how to weave the film together. It's great to hear from folks who find it inspiring and off to the farmer's market or community gardens they go. www.heartandsoilfilm.com tells you more.
