Music: Eduard Artemiev"…While many of his films deal with moral issues and concerns, Demirkubuz never sets himself up as arbiter of his characters’ actions. He rarely takes sides, preferring instead to show how each character has his reasons for doing what he does. Here, Demirkubuz treats the twin obsessions of Bekir and Ugur with respect. They might be self-destructive or even delusional, but there’s a kind of innocence to their passion. Demirkubuz was awarded the Best Director prize for Destiny at the 2006 Istanbul Film Festival." Film Society of Lincoln Center, September 2007.
"Arthouses and film festivals should pay attention, although they should not confuse this feature with Demirkubuz's earlier Fate (Yazgi), despite the deceptively similar title. A minimalist by nature, who systematically purges all but the essential details, Demirkubuz devises his film as a series of long, harrowing sequences, tracing a process which starts with innocent hopefulness, proceeds into strife and struggle and ends in a dejected acceptance of passions that will never be satisfied…" by Dan Fainaru in Screen Daily. "We have heard the story of Destiny (Kader, 2006) before, long before we saw the movie. It was told to us, almost ten years ago, by Bekir (Haluk Bilginer), one of the main characters in Innocence (Masumiyet, 1997), in a long—and almost immediately legendary—monologue. It was the story of how Bekir first met Ugur, how he fell for her immediately, and how he followed her from one city to another as his obsession grew stronger and stronger. While Bekir pursues Ugur, she goes after another man, Zagor, who is continuously transported from one prison to another, because he cannot stop committing crimes. Destiny, tells the story of this impossible love triangle and follows their journey all along the way." by Senem Aytac for Mental Minefields: The Dark Tales of Zeki Demirkubuz, 2007
