"The Bits in Between" follows a group of New York City performers as they struggle to find professional and personal happiness.
SynopsisGriffin has decided to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comic by impulsively quitting his stable, but uninspiring corporate job. Unfortunately for Griffin, his decision leads his girlfriend to quit their relationship. He now has to rely on his humor to navigate this recent breakup, his parents’ ongoing divorce, and the slow path to becoming a professional comedian.
Gina and Alex have recently moved in together, but are still learning how to be in a relationship. Gina is a talented theatre actress and musician on the verge of her big break while Alex is stumbling through skits in an improv comedy troupe, never really being able to nail an audition. The couple’s commitment is threatened when Gina books a role which could take her on the road.
Jane is in turmoil over whether to break-up with her boyfriend, so she is avoiding the situation by a taking a long-term cat-sitting job for a friend. She lives in limbo, watching TV, practicing lines for an audition and wandering the streets of New York trying to evade both her boyfriend and the inevitable next step in her life.
Through a series of intimate vignettes, "The Bits in Between" spotlights the awkward, funny and touching moments inside the daily lives of four New Yorkers trying to put together a life on-stage and off.
Director's StatementLate in 2008, we decided to make an ultra low-budget feature with only ourselves as the crew. As a husband and wife team, and partners in JetPak Productions, we are frequent collaborators and we wanted to see what kind of feature film just the two of us could make together. We had recently written a script that we really wanted to shoot, but it was going to take more time and money than we had and we really wanted to make another film as soon as we could, so we decided to temporarily shelve the other project and write an outline for a film that we could start shooting the following month. No money, no full script, just us, a camera and some very talented actors. While driving on a business trip from NYC to Boston we made a list of actors that we knew with strong improv skills, who we hoped would want to be part of our low budget film as well as a list of locations we knew we could get cheap or better yet, for free. Once we had the basics, we had a brief round of casting and then production began.
The result is The Bits In Between. About 50% of the film was loosely written and the rest was improvised from a structured outline. We were incredibly lucky to find actors who were excited to do a film like this and who were brave enough to let us pull elements from their real lives into the storyline. We cannot thank them enough for their collaboration and all the work they put into this film.
We are very proud of the The Bits In Between, having tried very hard to create something that is an honest, funny and moving portrayal of the incredibly difficult but often rewarding life of the performer.

"Truly DIY Feature"
The film started shooting in December of 2008 and finished principle photography in March of 2009. Since Cobb & Kuell run their own production company and had on-going client-based responsibilities, they needed to create a project that they could jump in and out of and work with actors that were cool with an on again/off again schedule. To make this work, they approached the shoot as if they were shooting three short films that would later be inter-cut together. Shoots would happen for two days, then pick up again and shoot for another two days a few weeks later, then shoot again for two days. All together, the film was shot in 15 days over 5 months, in New York City on HD.
Kuell served as the cinematographer and he and Cobb shared the producing, directing, audio and lighting duties, (with the exception of couple days of help from friends). Through their production company, JetPak Productions, Cobb & Kuell are more attuned to working with a medium-size crew, but they wanted to stretch themselves and see what they could do in a short period of time with a limited crew and budget.
