A man keeps his undead wife chained in the basement, desperately searching for any spark of humanity left in her.

Synopsis

Living among zombies has become commonplace. With the threat of infection ever-lurking, humans are required to gun down the undead - even if it means killing a loved one. Then there's David. A few years ago Jackie, the love of his life, became infected. Unable to bear the thought of her annihilation, he keeps her chained in the basement, out of sight of their young daughter. Bringing her tasty, brainy morsels, he has managed to keep her satiated. There is hope that a cure is near completion in Germany but will it come in time?

Director's Statement

The first time I read the script I was struck by the emotional aspect of the story. Here we have a devoted and loyal husband who, day after day, comes down to the basement to feed and check on his sick, infected wife. It is immediately clear that this is a tragic love story and that is precisely how I wanted this film to be made. Of course there is a zombie in the story and so this instantly classifies Not Even Death as a horror film. I was less concerned with genre and more concerned with creating a believable story about this man’s love and devotion to his family and the catastrophic repercussions of his undying devotion. It is my hope that audiences appreciate the story’s emotional impact while marveling at the distinctive storyline.

"Not Even Death" is a short film of six minutes from Gimme Credit Films. This short had a showing at The Oklahoma Horror Film Festival in September. The film will also have a showing at Los Angeles' Screamfest. "Not Even Death" involves more zombie romance. This time the relationship is between a regular mortal and a wife who has turned undead. The husband brings home the bacon, or in this case cow brains to his insatiable and very hungry and very dead wife. However, she who would rather eat something a little tastier and much bigger, regardless if she is related to her meal by blood or not. This film was a delight to watch and the twist is dark and tragic, which is suitable to a horror short. A little more time could have been used to develop the source of the plague, the effects of the disease on a wider scale, but the small story creates intimacy between the characters. As well, this is the first love story between a man and an undead woman this reviewer has seen; so, there is some suspense and intrigue housed within the reels. Short, well-written, and involving a family torn apart by an undead disease, "Not Even Death" is a fun watch and worth your time; the make-up effects are especially well done. Also the LA Screamfest begins October 8th and horror fans are encouraged to attend and while you are there, check out Monica Winter Vigil's "Not Even Death." Writer's Statement: Zombie movies have been done to death (or ‘undeath,’ as the case may be). I find the genre to be a tired one. I challenged myself in writing a script from a fresh perspective, something that people not interested in zombies would enjoy. In doing so, I really didn’t write a zombie script but, rather, a dramatic piece involving a zombie.
