A man tries to escape the desert.

Synopsis

After escaping his would-be killer, Peter - on foot and all alone in the desert - tries to find his way out of the wilderness and into civilization. Peter makes his way to a solitary house on the road, and meets a strange couple that lives there. Peter quickly finds himself thrust into the middle of dangerously dysfunctional marriage. After escaping from the couple, Peter continues on his way, but finds himself time after time back at the same house. As Peter tries to find a way out of this endless cycle, he ultimately winds up right back where he started, and further and further away from where he wants to go.

Director's Statement

Film is unique among different mediums of art because of the way that it relates to time and space. Film exists within a certain set time, therefore it can play with issues of time in ways that other mediums cannot. Also, film shows the world in photographic reality, and as a result it can play with issues of space and location in a very specific and concrete way.

Out of Nowhere plays with those dimensions of film, and explores how reordering location and time can be used to examine causality and fate. As Peter travels from house to house to escape his would be assailant (Josh), he meets the same two people. Each time he visits this couple (Mary and Curtis) he ruins the balance of their life in some new way. However, every time they see him, they have no memory of his previous visit. In spite of this, the choices that Peter makes as he attempts to leave the desert are the very choices that prevent his escape.

In the end, Peter finds himself out in the desert with Josh again, only now he has switched places and destinies. Time and space repeat themselves, and Peter is once again victim of this Sisyphean hell he has created.
