Outpatient is the story of Morris Monk who writes a murder mystery while locked up in a mental institution.

Synopsis

Morris (Justin Kirk) has existed quietly and contentedly in a mental institution for sometime now & is distressed to find that - but for an error in paperwork - he should have been released some time ago. He would much rather stay. When his therapist is forced to ok the release, she does so knowing that his writing fantasies have disturbed her of late. However, she cannot prove Morris to be dangerous and so he is released. A stylish neo-noir thriller of duplicity, dance, and the descent into madness, Outpatient marks Seattle director Alec Carlin's debut. When a soft-spoken young writer-inadvertently committed to an asylum for years due to a systems glitch – is released into the 'real' world, his writing begins to blur the boundaries of reality and paranoid hallucination. And his therapist begins to suspect she has unleashed a ruthless murderer.

Director's Statement

I have always been fascinated by the gap between the story we have about ourselves and the story that everyone else has about us, and how, in a sense, everyone else’s story is the 'real' story because we live, for the most part, in the real world. I also love layered stories, stories within stories, and I think that’s one way we reconcile ourselves and our stories, to the world’s. Outpatient is a story about the past that is so intimately connected to the present that the real world predicts the future, but of course sometimes, the real world is just plain wrong.

"Everything that happened was meant to be. Even the hurdles we thought we couldn't overcome became our allies."

On choosing Outpatient as our first project
Carlo and I had known each other for 25 years. We both had been in the industry for a long time. He as a producer, writer, actor, director; me as a costume designer, producer, director. We had never worked together so we decided we wanted to find a project we could work on together. He sent me Outpatient and I let it sit for a couple of weeks. I finally got around to reading it one night about 1:00am. It was such a page-turner I couldn't go back to sleep. We both loved the script and decided to move forward and make the film. During the development process, we had so much fun we decided to start our own company, Clear Pictures. Since its inception, we have since optioned half a dozen feature scripts, a book by Marcus Rey, and have several television projects we are developing for television.

On choosing the format
We originally developed Alec Carlin’s script Outpatient as a 35 mm project and we always knew that we wanted to shoot in Seattle. At the same time, we were also looking for a project to shoot digitally once production of Outpatient was completed. Eventually, we realized that Outpatient was perfect material for the digital medium. We pitched our plan to Alec Carlin and cinematographer Andres Garreton and began the process of testing various cameras as well as format. The more we talked the more we became exited at the prospect of using the digital medium. It had its limitation but it also gave us tremendous possibilities. More then anything we were thrilled to explore the forefront of this new technology and use it to tell the story of Outpatient.

On hiring Justin Kirk - MORRIS
Justin and I met on the set of "Jack & Jill" a Warner Bros. TV series. We hit it off instantly. We knew we needed a great actor to pull off the duel role of Morris. We had always thought Justin would be perfect for the role but unfortunately, he was unavailable due to his show at the Lincoln Center as well as other projects. For other reasons we ended up pushing our project from April to June and Justin became available. In a few days, Justin was signed and immediately started dance lessons the next day.

On hiring Claudia Mason - RAVEN
When I first met the actress Claudia Mason, I felt like I had known her all of my life. When she first auditioned with Justin Kirk "Morris" we were concerned she was too “green” as this was her first foray and audition in acting and we were already considering well-known talent for the part. We read other actresses for the role but couldn't get Claudia out of our minds. I called her in on a Sunday. I teased her hair, put on heavy make up and worked with her a little and she blew us away. We hired her instantly.
