Every Autumn, fifty million tiny Monarch butterflies fly a mind-blowing 5,000 kilometers from the Great Lakes of Canada to their winter sanctuaries in the Oyamel forests of Central México, only to be confronted by deteriorating ecosystems along the way. "Papalotzin" is a nature documentary about the extraordinary adventure of pilot Vico Gutierrez, who in an ultra-light plane decorated as a Monarch butterfly, follows the Monarchs's journey with the goal of increasing awareness about the challenges they face and along the way meets passionate people dedicated to protect this migration for future generations. Papalotzin ensures an unforgettable visual journey through microscopic animations, ancient legends and spectacular aerial shots of Canada, the United States and Mexico that will inspire us all to take action in the conservation of this incredible butterfly.

Papalotzin is not merely a documentary about adventure and butterflies. It is an ongoing project that will create awareness about the importance to protect our natural habitats, by recognizing the Monarch butterfly as an ambassador for nature. An insect that weighs less than half a gram can fit in the palm of your hand and flies across three countries, innumerable landscapes, and distances of up to five thousand kilometers. Monarch butterflies are extraordinary creatures of nature and a true inspiration to everyone. They call on us to protect their breeding and hibernation habitats in which they need food, rest and the right climatic conditions to survive their phenomenal migration and over-wintering.

Participation and awareness
Papalotzin combines a documentary film with an active participation in the protection of nature through awareness. All the members of its team are devoted to the conservation of our environment and the expedition was prepared with that goal in mind. Papalotzin, the ultra-light plane, piloted by Vico Gutierrez, is a symbol of this intention.
