A sweet, romantic and very short movie about the most filthy and shocking moment of a couple's relationship.

Synopsis

When Tom and Deborah's evening of spontaneous adventure into the sexually deviant results in a pleasantly unexpected eruption of feelings and other things, Tom is inspired to do something uncharacteristically romantic. Told through a bold visual style mixing a variety of split screens and visual effects, "Ring Finger" takes a unique, cinematic approach to the exploration of the single most shocking moment of a couple's once-inert relationship.

Director's Statement

When Brad Gottfred showed me his script, I was excited, but a little wary. The dialog had a hard sarcastic bite, and the subject matter was of the sort that a lot of people might be disinclined to watch this little movie, no matter how short it is. We decided to make most of the work we did in preparation for the shoot about sweetening the relationship between Tom and Deborah. What she does to Tom has to be done out of love, or Tom would clench right up. Helping things in that direction was our decision to cast Brad opposite his girlfriend Joanne. They know how to be affectionate and comfortable with each other and it feels to me like it shows on screen.

Even then, with the dirty sexiness and the unconventional use of split screens, I feel like we can only make so many weird choices before we completely lose people. The anchor, then, is the love and care Tom and Deborah show for each other. He trusts that where ever it is she’s taking him, everything will be ok. The hope is that people will recognize their own relationships in Tom and Deb and be willing to trust us enough as storytellers and filmmakers that for three minutes, we can take them to some unusual (and maybe smelly) places and everything will be ok.

Despite its short, short length, "Ring Finger" took a lot of time to pull together. Brad Gottfred wrote the script in early 2009, with the intention that Jon could direct it and he could act in it. The problem was that Brad was in Oklahoma, working on producing a feature. Jon, meanwhile, was completely wrapped up in work and being a new dad. Despite several attempts at shooting it earlier, they finally got it together on October 3rd. It took months before the actors, crew and director were available - or even in the same state - on the same day. In the meantime, Jon created an animatic and slowly built up and elaborated the movie's split-screen concept. Just about every visual aspect of the movie was developed over the extra months between the original shoot date - in May - and the actual shoot date three months later. Patience is a virtue!
