"Salsa Lessons" is a love story about two people meeting by chance in New York City
Synopsis"Salsa Lessons" is a love story about two people meeting by chance in New York City. Pedro is a Salsa instructor and Rosa wants to learn how to dance salsa. Through the power of salsa dancing they find each other and also discover that their painful past is very much still in their present. Can they move on? Letting go of the past is not as easy as we think.
Director's StatementWhen I started writing my second feature "Salsa Lessons", my objective was to do a film with a linear story that would focus on the two main characters evenly. I wanted to also go in a totally different direction visually from my first feature "107 Street" which was a more grittier film about city life in New York City. In the film, Pedro meets Rosa by chance in New York City and as the story develops we find out that they have a lot in common. They both have been hurt by their past and are trying to move forward. I try to give an objective view of their struggle and how hard it is to let go of the past. There is a visual sequence in the film that I think illustrates this idea perfectly. The scene is of Pedro going back to painting after not doing so for a while and Rosa dancing in her apartment and appearing more upbeat. As the scene progresses, the audience sees the struggle and the hope that they are overcoming their fears. Finally, I think the film says that we have to grieve, but at some point we have to move on from the past and live in the present. The film is also packed with many salsa dancing scenes. Just in case you've forgotten the film is called "Salsa Lessons."
