A meditation on the trappings of compromise, and the emotional dynamics of resentment sustained, in the face of an impending conclusion.

Synopsis

"Short Day" chronicles the interior stream of consciousness; part anxiety attack, part reluctant confession, and all the seemingly opposing resolutions that are really the alternating rebelling against and conformity to unfulfilled longings for love, respect and peace of mind, of a writer in her early 30's, Natalie, caught up in the consequences of a love triangle and betrayal, while anticipating the impending conclusion in the live-in van of her absent boyfriend, Victor.

Director's Statement

I could describe "Short Day", character, storyline, but like Henry Miller I try to get to the inner pattern, the recurrent behavior in different confrontations, revealing character, not the linear plot line of "I did this, "this and that happened". A line of thought, similar to others, and hopefully relating to more for that common puzzle of our existence, artists specifically, because they try to understand. ENTREPRENEURIAL FILMMAKERS; Rosselini's "Human Voice" stars Anna Magnani only!, pleading on the phone with her husband leaving her for another woman. Painfully life is the true source of art. Forget production values, just act well. PASSIONATE ACTORS; Cassavetes believed the ability to express your need in life translates to your acting ability. O'Neill stood for life's poetical interpretion communicated to the soul-starved. PERSONAL WRITERS; Kerouac recorded the flow already intact in the heart, calling censorship shame, revision lying. INDEPENDENT SPIRITS; Confess the truth about yourself and you'll be free! PHILOSOPHERS; Erich Fromm said said not to have out of anger, but to be and share it all. PRODUCERS; Kiyosaki knows entrepreneurship to be a natural trait of survival minus fear, convert the problem to the solution, and you'll have your business and the source of inspiration. CASSAVETES FANS; The empty ones try to make you lose hope, don't fall for it please! Creative control is yours because you are its' very source! CAN YOU RELATE OUT THERE???

Crew

In '92 I loved film, but long, uninterrupted scenes, like "Judgement in Nuremberg"; and literature, but stream of consciousness, Kerouac sweating on his writing binges.
In '97 the premise started shaping around envy, between artistic ability to create but not fully live, and to live, express, and avenge, emptying oneself before finding inspiration.
In '01 I got the script, people, DV camera, and alcohol, but the story hit too close to home. So I ended up producing a Cassavetes retrospective. After losing apartment and job, I bought a van to really write, producer Fred Caruso (of "Midnight Cowboy", "Network", etc) telling me: "I read, with great pleasure, the treatment and long version of "SCENES". Your characters and story line are deep and engaging.
"SHORT DAY" is a one-character interior monologue "performed" in singular setting, unedited, part of trilogy "SCENES OF IDOLATRY AND RESENTMENT", non-linear time development of the mind as honestly as possible.
