Every parent has a secret...A young man discovers the unexpected...The truth will be revealed!

Synopsis

A newly married couple meets the expectations of their conservative families; a twist in fate forces them to confront their true selves. Years later, their only son is left to discover the real truth behind the way his mother was infected with HIV and died of AIDS.

Director's Statement

Silent Shame is a reflection of the complexity of human physiology. More importantly it shows how the lack of courage to take a stand for who you are it negatively impacts other people. This powerful story is based on true stories and it must be told.

Daily Herald Newspaper He plays the role of Ulyssis, who grows up in the 1980s in the early days of the HIV epidemic and whose mother dies from the virus, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother. The movie is about Ulyssis' quest to learn how his mother was infected and come to grips with his father's secret affair with another man.

Extra Newspaper Set in the mid-80s, AIDS is a topic rarely discussed during that era, especially in the Latino culture, Tapia said. "Back then, a lot of people died not knowing how they got AIDS," Tapia told EXTRA. "It was a new disease and people thought you could [only] get it if you were gay." Tapia hopes a film like this will shed some light on a subject that was ignored for so long and will put emphasis on the importance of having safe sex no matter someone's ethnicity or sexual orientation. "It's a personal story because I know people who have AIDS," Tapia said. "It's also personal because like Virginia, I am Latina."

Refeljo Several locally made films are in the lineup, including “Silent Shame,” whose story about a couple touched by HIV is told over a period of 20 years. Producer Dalia Tapia of Berwyn-based Proud Latino Productions said she perfected the screenplay over the course of a year and with field research at an HIV clinic in Chicago.

In a world run by males, often times the female stories go untold. It’s a pleasure to give a voice to the many women who died of AIDS in the 80’s. “They did not fit the profile” for that disease. My goal is to create awareness with “Silent Shame” since there has been an increase of HIV among minority women.
