The group-of-friends-out-to-get-laid movie has been done more times than can be counted. When another one comes along, it better have a good reason to exist. Ryan Gielen’s The Graduates does this with the story of a group of four friends who go to Ocean City, Maryland to celebrate their high school graduation. A film like this, where the plot is so common as to render it nearly invisible, all depends on the dialogue and characters. This film really delivers. The jokes are rarely laugh-out-loud funny, but the characters are interesting, well drawn, and well played by the entire cast. The Graduates also has some great music. This film is more low key than expected and is a solid teen comedy that’s definitely worth checking out.
