Olive is depressed because of an absurd series of family tragedies. Jack, a concerned neighbor calls a Professional Lifter Upper of Spirits to remedy the situation. The Lifter Upper finds that Olive will be his toughest case yet.
SynopsisWhen Olive (Tiffany Chambers-Goldberg) was a young girl, she was happy. She loved anything that inhabited the sky. Then she witnessed a terrible series of absurd, and unfortunate events beginning with her best friend spontaneously combusting, and ending with her goldfish going belly up. Traumatized, she has spent the past twelve years as a recluse. Her only friend is Jack (In-Q), who brings her a case of baby food once a week to sustain her. Concerned, he calls a “Professional Lifter Upper of Spirits” to remedy her depression.
The next day, the Lifter Upper (Will Scott-Simpson), a four-year-old in a three-piece suite stands at the door. He tries to cheer her up by bringing her a tiny kitten, break-dancing, singing opera, fish juggling and other antics. At every turn Olive slams the door in his face or begins to cry. By chance, he discovers a key under her mat that allows him in and he sees a model hot air balloon hanging from the ceiling. He tries a few more tricks, but still gets the boot. Discouraged, he sits on the stairs to think and realizes the balloon is the answer. Olive likes things that float or fly.
The following day, he spins a propeller toy into the air. Olive catches it and smiles. He sends in a little parade of balloons with cutout figures hanging from them and she is elated. She laughs and jumps on her bed with the Lifter Upper. Jack and Olive celebrate.
Director's StatementAfter seeing so many movies about torture and violence and working on things of that nature myself, I needed to make something uplifting. I suppose I took that desire rather literally with "The Lifter Upper". Nevertheless, it satisfied what I needed it to. I also notice that I have themes of the supernatural and whimsical throughout my work and this is no exception. I feel I am most happy with stories that take me beyond my everyday experience. I hope that this story can do that for someone else.
