Young Lucian must deliver a letter to the doctor in the bordering town to save his dying mother.

Lucian Cain is an 11-year-old boy who lives in Cheshire, a small turn-of-the-century mill town with a bordering forest. Lucian was born with a gimp leg, which keeps him from having a normal childhood and keeps him right where Billy, the town bully wants him. Lucian also has a sick mother for whom he lovingly takes care of despite his handicap. Cheshire holds lore of an ancient Screamer that lives in the bordering forest. Stories describe how The Screamer devours little children by using their deepest fears against them. When his mother falls deathly ill, Lucian is forced to enter the forest with nothing but the clothes on his back and a sealed envelope that his mother told him must be delivered to the doctor in the next town. Fears Lucian never knew he had are about to be reveled.
