A man stuck in a job he hates has a dream that changes his life.

Synopsis

Charlie Wu has been an accountant for years, stuck in a job he hates, a job that's sucking away his soul. He knows he should leave and go for his dream job, but he just can't -- or won't -- quit. If he leaves his good paying job, he fears his parents and friends will think he's a stupid failure -- and he knows he could fail! So, Charlie waits and stews as the seasons pass, content with shoving money into the hole in his heart.

One night Charlie has a vision where he meets Eudaimonia, the Queen of his Soul. She whispers: "Be somebody else before you're thirty," and launches Charlie on a wild, funny, touching, and ultimately life changing dream.

If you've ever lost your way on life's journey; if you've ever settled for a paycheck instead of your passion; if you've ever postponed your life's special dream, THE NEW, TRUE, CHARLIE WU is for - and about! - you!

Director's Statement

I wrote "The New, True, Charlie Wu" in the summer of 2008, but it's been rattling around inside my head for about 16 years. Like Charlie, I, too, was once locked in job I hated, and one night I had a dream; a woman floated toward me and said, "Se somebody else before your forty." Well, that vision put me on a path that changed my life, and I suspect in this economy, a good many folks are waking to the fact they've got to change their lives, too.

I wanted to have fun with this film...I wanted the audience to leave the theater with a sense of joy and hope, and I wanted to do it without preaching, I had never written a musical, and worked with a super Nashville song writer, Casey Kelly. It was a wonderful collaboration...and I think the original music in this film is testimony to that!

I went with a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic cast for a reason: I wanted to show the universality of a basic human drive -- the desire for authenticity in one's life, and how one's work gives one meaning, purpose, and identity (and vice versa.) I think everyone understands that sense on a deep subconscious level. So I hope audiences see a little bit of themselves in our film...and, who knows, it may even prompt some to have their own "Charlie Wu" moment.
