The girls took my camera hit the road, and gave me a film.
SynopsisThe The The follows Pico Lovage (Sarah Wooding) and Jack Knotty (Melissa Davis) as they hitchhike, couch surf, and camp across the United States, yearning for more out of life. The film documents the duo's encounters with random friends and strangers, often revealing their qualms with modern times.
Director's Statement"The movie was an experiment of filming on the road with these two girls who had just moved to Austin, and wanted to quit their jobs and keep moving and having fun. I planned to film them on a road trip to NYC and back through the Midwest. Before that, Sarah took a trip with Melissa and I gave them a video camera to film that as well. They ended up splitting ways with their ride and hitchhiking to LA and SF on their own. Without much strategy I compiled all the footage and created a narrative from it. I wanted to blur the lines between real and scripted, because some of the scenes were in fact staged, and in the end the movie gives off that raw feeling. It turned out to be a backwards way of filming/editing, but I learned a great deal in the process, and had a great time on the road as well."
