Each night the only bordercrossing between India and Pakistan on a 3000km stretch becomes the sight of an extraordinary event.

Synopsis

Each night the only border crossing between India and Pakistan on a 1000km stretch becomes the sight of an extraordinary event. Thousands of people gather to witness the ritual closing of the border, after which the masses get as close as possible to the gate to greet their former neighbors. This "festival" is therefore on the one hand a celebration of the partition, but on the other hand also the only connecting element. What do the terms separation, home and proximity mean to the people on both sides?

"Wagah," a short film directed by India's Supriyo Sen, won the sixth Berlin Today Award, a prize given for a film made by members of the Berlin International Film Festival's Talent Campus. The theme of this year's Berlin Today competition was "My Wall," in honor of the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. Supriyo Sen's film is set around a daily event at the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. Every evening, thousands of spectators come out to cheer the ritual closing of the border. "(This film) is a convincing manifesto against any wall that divides people," said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, reading from the jury's statement, at the Berlin Today award ceremony Sunday night. The documentary "My Super Sea Wall," from director Gina Abatemarco, which looks at the struggles of a small island community off the coast of Alaska, received special mention from the Berlin Today jury, made up of German directors Wim Wenders, Emily Atef and Andreas Dresen. - THR February 8th 2009
