Jack Kerouac and his cohorts, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, were the the embodiment of the spirit of the Beat Generation of the fifties. Kerouac's writings coined the term "beat" to refer to way that his friends carried themselves at a time when most of America was focused on buying a suburban tract home and raising a family. The film traces his roots to his early Catholic upbringing in Lowell, Massachusetts, through his discovery of "spontaneous composition" that rocked the literary world, up through his tragic premature self-destructive death. The film includes interviews with many of his cronies including, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Ferlinghetti, and McClure. It also includes rare footage of Kerouac reading from "On The Road" and being interviewed by William F. Buckley.
